Crafting impact stories that inspire action

You’re transforming lives every day. Yet too often, the way that impact is communicated doesn’t reflect the power of the work in its true glory.

Good work deserves unforgettable storytelling.

I help nonprofits, social enterprises and purpose-driven founders uncover human stories at the heart of their work—and tell them in ways that inspire stakeholders to care, connect and contribute.

Whether you're preparing for a fundraising meeting, building your organisation's narrative or reimagining an impact report, we'll create emotive stories that move people to act.

Four ways to work together

01

Fundraising Pitch

A great idea isn’t enough if people don’t immediately understand why it matters.

Together, we’ll shape your fundraising narrative into a pitch that’s clear, memorable and persuasive—whether it’s a two-minute elevator pitch or a full slide deck. Through multiple rounds of refinement, we’ll sharpen your messaging, simplify complexity and build a story that gives funders confidence in both your mission and your leadership. The final output isn’t just a polished presentation; it’s a narrative you can adapt across meetings, applications and fundraising conversations.

02

Founder Story

People invest in people before they invest in organisations.

Your founder story isn’t a chronology of your career. It’s the deeply personal journey that explains why this problem became impossible for you to ignore—and why you’re uniquely placed to solve it. Together, we’ll sculpt your authentic Story of Why that feels natural to tell and powerful to hear. Whether you’re speaking at a conference, writing a LinkedIn post, or introducing your organisation to donors, you’ll have a story that consistently builds trust and connection.

03

Beneficiary Story

Every social-impact organisation has inspiring beneficiaries. I believe in telling those stories with dignity, awe and hope.

Applying a structured journalism framework, I help transform conversations from the field into emotive stories that become versatile assets across websites, annual reports, donor communications, social media and fundraising campaigns.

04

Creative Content

Are you bored of churning out the same kind of stories and reports that go unnoticed by your audience?

Be it your website or social media or newsletter or report or pitch or anything: I instill freshness in every piece of your communication so it delights stakeholders.

A few ways this has looked in practice

Annual Report · Nonprofit Storytelling

Reimagining Akanksha Foundation’s Annual Report (2021–22)

Akanksha Foundation approached me with a typical mandate: to create their annual report for 2021–22. But I didn’t want to submit another PDF that just checks off the compliance box and that no one wants to read.

So I turned all notions of a usual annual report upside down:

A typical annual report relays information about the year gone by chronologically. I wanted to employ emotive storytelling, so we had a real Akanksha student give the audience a tour of the year at her beloved school.

A “normal” annual report is stuffed with exhaustive details about every event of the year. But lengthy text is difficult to digest given limited attention spans, so I pushed for sharp, bite-sized content sans jargon — edited brutally, until each piece included was uber-essential yet preserved the depth of the work.

A conventional annual report, in its vertical scroll, often contains photos to give viewers a window into the organization. I wanted to offer an authentic experience of visiting an Akanksha school digitally, via horizontal design. The elements and backdrops in the report are all re-created from actual photos of an Akanksha school and classroom — and so is Dhanashree, the Akanksha student who walks you through the report (literally!).

Capacity Building · Training & Mentoring

Building storytelling capacity

I believe every Social Purpose Organisation should develop the muscle to identify, collect and tell its own stories internally.

Through workshops and personalised coaching, I enable communication teams and nonprofit leaders to build practical storytelling skills, drawing from my course at Harvard.

I have conducted narrative-building trainings independently as well as by invitation. For example, I am mentoring nonprofit founders at The/Nudge Institute’s incubator on chiseling their fundraising pitches.

What it’s like to work together

Smita’s feedback was deeply grounded in an understanding of both impact-driven work and what funders truly look for. She didn’t just help us “improve slides”, she pushed us to articulate our story better, sharpen our problem framing, and present our vision with confidence and coherence.

The person behind the stories

Smita Pranav Kothari

From telling people’s stories as a witness in my role as a journalist, my current journey is to enable change-makers to tell human stories of their impact.

After earning a Master’s in Liberal Arts (ALM) in Journalism from Harvard University in 2012, I wrote feature stories for Forbes, Condé Nast, Reader’s Digest, Caravan, Mint and several other publications.

Now I empower purposeful leaders and organizations to create narratives that help them raise support, build credibility and deepen engagement with their funders and stakeholders.

What has remained constant across my work is my approach toward a story in any shape or form: I try to ask the right questions, listen carefully and look beyond the obvious–and consequently produce content that makes the audience feel something and do something
